“Tight plotting snappy dialogue...Rick Riordan,
the story moves at a breathless pace.”
New York Times Book Review
Scholastic Inc. is the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books. The company approached Heyworks to create a new way of emerging learning, blending educational world and entertaining gaming genre.
We are always excited to create something original and fresh. No publisher ever before has tried to create such a rich multimedia experience. Heyworks team was instantly intrigued and hooked. The challenge was to adapt immersing 3D experience to a manifold array of devices, keeping the game run and look great on numerous platforms, be it Web, iOS or Android devices.
The project consists of several books with a corresponding game for each part of the novel. Let's take a look at what has been done already!
When best friends Dak and Sera discover the key to time travel — the Infinity Ring — they're swept up in a centuries-long secret war for the fate of mankind. Recruited by the Historians, a secret society that dates back to Aristotle, the kids learn that history has gone disastrously off course — and it's up to them to save it.
First part of the Infinity Ring Series takes place in the 17 c. Paris. Our team has not only successfully designed and optimized such a large location, but we have also preserved and communicated historical authentic setting.
19 211 triangles make an exact copy of Notre Dame de Paris
Notre Dame is a key building in the setting. Our 3D modelers built an exact copy of the building. We bet you won't be able to find any differences.
One of the main aspects of the Infinity Ring series is to teach children through books and games. We wanted to link imaginary world of literature with a more tangible world of educational computer games.
Scholastic required unprecedented historical accuracy of interiors and exteriors, and we succeeded.
All the objects, as characters, were verified by the customer for historical coherence. We developed carriages and even authentic 17 c. door knobs, paying attention to slightest details.
Paris is quite a large city and it required substantial initial planning, as we were to meet hardware limitations on mobile platforms.
First of all we created elementary blocks the city was built with. Using a small array of the assets pallet we were able to constructed a large, vibrant city.
Mainly, Infinity Ring Series are set in third person top-view, however, it is possible to have a first person look around the city. Our aim was to create such a setting, that would work in both cases.
There are three main characters of the Infinity Ring Series, which were modeled with great attention and details. In addition to main characters, Heyworks have developed all minor characters, starting from scratches to final high-detailed portraits and 3D animated models.
Main characters limit of polygons was set to 2100 and animations included these states: idle, walk, pickup, reach. While working on characters we faced quite a challenge: Scholastic wanted all characters, both main and additional to have a true historic look, but at the same time be appealing to children audience today.
Every character sketch and brief started with a short description of a profession and occupation of a character, their plot line and historical notes. We researched the subject very thoroughly before going any further and were checking every stage with Scholastic to proceed, brainstorming on the way.
First, each character started with a small brief from the client, which was a short description of a character with technical details. Minor characters had a limit of 1750 polygons and included walk and idle animations.
Then our team of designers would find historical references for appropriate clothing, accessories, popular items, style and fashion. Also on this stage the client selected a final version of a character from several possible variants.
When the sketches were approved we moved on to creating a high-detailed portrait version of a character. Many of them were to be used in print, therefore all the models were very detailed and live.
After the portrait version approval, we modeled and animated the 3D figures of the characters according to polygon limits set by Scholastic.
Overall, we have created 3 main characters, 10 additional characters with basic animation and have populated Paris with 3 versions of male and female characters.
We have optimized the workflow, with only one rig created for each character and basic animation done only once. This allowed us to save time and optimize resources.
Infinity Ring contains several mini puzzle games to test children’s knowledge and skills. We worked closely with Scholastic and introduced our ideas and improvements to classic logical games. All art for the mini games was developed by our 2D and 3D artists.
Player has to push the button to start rotating the hook, then timely release the button to hit the aim.
Racing game. We've created another location using the same Paris pallet. As the scene was very detailed it required substantial performance optimization.
